Are you woken in the night by their choking sound?" />

So, maybe it is time you and your partner went and visited the dentist. Sleep apnoea is a debilitating illness that brings sufferers unpleasantly close to death. Sleep apnoea is a condition whereby the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses while you sleep. This is what accounts for that choking sound in the night. When the airway is blocked it takes the brain almost twenty seconds to realise that there is no air and so it wakes the body in order to get some.

At Millennium Dental we have the solution and the friendly staff to help you deal with this terrible ailment…

Sleep apnoea causes more than just snoring and choking (which can happen hundreds of times a night without you ever knowing about it, even your partner may not be aware just how frequently it occurs), sleep apnoea also causes fatigue, short-term memory problems and is responsible for a minority of motor vehicle accidents.

Unfortunately those with sleep apnoea:

Have an increased risk of cardiac disease

Are 4 times more like to have a heart attack

Make up 50% of stroke victims

What is worse for those who sleep alone is that they may not even know they snore, may not know that their body has to kick start its breathing hundreds of times during the night; all they know is that they wake up tired, feel tired, have headaches but have no idea that they are suffering sleep apnoea.

That is why it is important to see your dentist if you are suffering any of these symptoms.

At Millennium Dental we offer a range of solutions to help alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnoea…

The first thing that we do at Millennium Dental is organise a sleep study. This will determine the seriousness of the sleep apnoea. Thanks to advances in technology a sleep study can be performed in the comfort of your own home with the use of specialist technology provided by Sleep Services Australia.

The treatments for sleep apnoea depend on the severity of your sleep apnoea:

For snoring or mild sleep apnoea we have a device called a Mandibular Advancement Splint. The Mandibular Advancement Splint is a device that is custom made (and is comfortable) that enables the airway to stay open while you are asleep by holding the lower jawbone forward.

If you suffer severe sleep apnoea than you will require a CPAP machine; a CPAP machine forces air into the airway by pressure. A respiratory physician will supply this device.

At Millennium Dental you can be confident that you are in the best and most capable hands…

Mark Rosenberg has been treating snoring and sleep apnoea for thirty years and is qualified to help you with your snoring or sleep apnoea issues.

For more information on our sleep apnoea treatments, or to book an appointment at our conveniently located dental practice in Mosman NSW, please do not hesitate to contact us.

If so, they may be suffering from a serious sleep disorder- OSA

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a serious sleep disorder that according to the World Health Organisation affects over 100 million people worldwide. People who suffer from this sleep disorder experience a cessation of breathing during sleep and due to this wake many times a night to kick-start their breathing again. This disorder is primarily caused by the soft tissues at the back of the throat collapsing during sleep, which prevents the flow of air to the lungs, causing a deprivation of oxygen in the vital organs of the body.

Some of the most common symptoms of sleep apnoea include…

• Excessively loud snoring
• Fatigue
• Migraines and headaches
• Choking or gasping during sleep
• Poor concentration, learning difficulties and irritability

Health risks associated with obstructive sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea has been found to dramatically increase the risk of serious health conditions and accidents such as:
• Coronary heart disease (1.2-5.4 times the risk)
• Stroke (1.6-3.1 times the risk)
• High blood pressure (2.9 times the risk)
• Congestive heart failure (2.4 times the risk)
• Type 2 diabetes (1.5 times the risk)
• Motor accidents (2-7 times increased risk)
Studies have revealed that sufferers of obstructive sleep apnoea are potentially more dangerous on our roads than drunk drivers!

At our Mosman dental practice, we can treat snoring and OSA with oral appliance therapy

This non-invasive treatment helps to bring your jaw into proper alignment during sleep, keeping the airway open by preventing the collapse of soft tissues at the back of the throat. Obesity is a major contributor to the development of OSA, so certain lifestyle changes may be prescribed for the management of this sleep disorder.

Does your partner complain about your excessive snoring?

If you are constantly waking up feeling like you’ve had no sleep and are excessively tired throughout the day, you may have a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). People who have this condition wake up hundreds of times a night because their airway becomes blocked. The brain sends a message to start breathing again and this in turn wakes the sufferer up, often with no recollection that they have woken up during the night.

What is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep Apnoea occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax, causing a vibration which is transferred to sound as the sufferer struggles to breathe. The difference between normal snoring and Sleep Apnoea is where normal snorers do not awaken; sufferers of OSA often awake gasping for breath.

If left untreated…

There are some possible side effects to having Sleep Apnoea, which include:

Snorers are 33% more likely to develop heart disease

Sleep Apnoea sufferers are 4 times more likely to have a heart attack

Nearly 50% of stroke victims have Sleep Apnoea

It is important to investigate further if you are a snorer and with us at Millennium Dental, we offer a full Obstructive Sleep Apnoea assessment to measure the severity of your case and offer appropriate treatment.

Get an assessment…

Symptoms of OSA include:

Loud snoring

Choking/gasping during sleep

Morning headaches

Poor concentration

Memory disorientation

Anxiety or depression

If you are experiencing one or more of the above, you may be suffering from Sleep Apnoea. Book a consultation with us at Millennium Dental to ensure you get your good night’s sleep.

Here you’ll find helpful information and advice about how treatment at Millennium Dental can help relieve or even cure snoring and sleep apnoea for good!

About Sleep Apnoea

Do you wake up tired? Does your partner complain that you snore loudly? You may suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea…

What is snoring?

Snoring occurs when the muscles at the back of your mouth relax and fall back into your throat, causing a vibration.

What is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep Apnoea is similar to snoring but rather than the throat being partially blocked, causing a vibration, the throat is completely blocked so you can’t breathe. The brain detects the loss of oxygen and kick-starts your breathing again.

Symptoms of OSA include:

Tiredness during the day

Anxiety

Depression

The unfortunate facts… Did you know?

Snorers have a 33% increased risk of cardiac disease

People with OSA are 4 times more likely to have a heart attack

Nearly 50% of stroke victims have OSA
