What causes snoring?
When you sleep, the tissues in the back of the mouth relax and collapse into the throat which can partially block the airway. This then vibrates and causes the sound we call snoring.

OSA is the abvieviation for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?
When you sleep, the tissues at the back of the mouth relax and sometimes fall into the throat. When this partially blocks the airway, it vibrates and makes a noise we call snoring. When these tissues completely block the airway, you can’t breathe. This is called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. The brain picks up that there is a lack of oxygen and kick starts your breathing again.

What are the dangers of sleep Apnoea?
Sleep Apnoea can lead to a number of serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

Are there any risks associated with snoring?
Yes, there are health concerns that can arise from snoring. For example, snorers have a 33% increased risk of cardiac disease.

What is the treatment for snoring and mild to moderate OSA?
Snoring and mild to moderate apnoea are best treated by the use of a mandibular advancement splint, MAS.

What is MAS?
MAS is a comfortable customised device which gently pushes the lower jaw forward to open the airway and allow you to breathe freely.

How do I know if I have Sleep Apnoea?
Unless you have someone who sleeps next to you and is awake to observe your sleeping patterns, you may not know you have Sleep Apnoea. It may be the norm for you to wake up tired, have trouble sleeping, struggle to concentrate or feel depressed and irritable. But these are all signs that you may have Sleep Apnoea.

How do you treat severe OSA?
Severe Sleep Apnoea requires the use of a CPAP machine which pushes air into the airway. This device is supplied by a respiratory physician.
